Vegan Mineral Sunscreens 2025: What Works, What Doesn’t, and Why It Matters

Today we will be talking about something that’s been quietly “brewing” in the clean beauty world.

Vegan mineral sunscreens are finally having their moment this year. Yes, it was about bloody time!!

I mean, look at how a sunscreen ingredients list usually looks lilke:

This is a NO-NO in my books!!

I use zinc oxide in my formulations, a natural product that serves many purposes although that’s not for this post. Anyway, I’m genuinely excited to see products that don’t make us choose between protecting our skin and protecting the planet (you’ll see below). Also more and more brands are coming up with formulas I think are lovely for us.

Yes, the market is a scam. But more of that in the future when I’m in the mood for that rant (again).

Back to our vegan mineral sunscreens… before we celebrate too hard, let’s talk about what’s still going wrong.

What’s actually working (finally)

This time, the mineral sunscreen revolution isn’t just marketing fluff.

I hope.

Brands are cracking the code on zinc oxide formulations that don’t leave you looking like a ghost, (which by the way I DON’T mind but I know that many of you do).

They’re doing it without dodgy chemical filters (ahem, see image above) or sneaky animal-derived ingredients (ouch this one hurts me so much!!).

  • Non-nano zinc oxide is the ingredient I’m all for. It sits on your skin’s surface instead of being absorbed, giving genuine broad-spectrum protection while staying reef-safe.
  • The vegan angle matters too. Too many “natural” sunscreens sneak in beeswax or animal byproducts. They simply do. Seeing plant-based formulas that truly work feels like a massive win in my books.

And the shift isn’t just hype. According to Harper’s Bazaar’s beauty trend report, searches for vegan skincare products are climbing fast this year, yes, with mineral sunscreens leading the way.

The problems I’m still seeing

Here’s where I get a bit ranty (yet again).

Some brands are charging £40+ for 50ml of “clean” sunscreen. That’s not accessible skincare. I’m sorry. That’s luxury positioning disguised as wellness.

Sun protection should NEVER EVER EVER be a privilege.

Then there’s the packaging.

Products wrapped in three layers of plastic, shoved into oversized boxes, then labelled “sustainable” because the tube’s recycled?

Please.

Sustainability is a whole lifecycle, not just a checkbox!!

What actually matters in mineral sunscreens

When you’re choosing (or formulating) mineral sun protection, these are the non-negotiables:

  • Zinc oxide concentration between 15–25%
  • Non-nano particles (safe for skin + reefs)
  • Plant-based carrier oils for smooth application
  • Minimal ingredients (no fillers, no perfume)
  • Always reef-safe (no oxybenzone, no octinoxate)

Less is more.

Five brilliant ingredients can outperform twenty average ones. Trust me.

The science that’s actually exciting

Behind the scenes, biotech is finally stepping up. Accio’s plant-based skincare report shows how fermentation tech is creating new plant-derived UV filters (nature-inspired actives that could change the sunscreen game).

Encapsulation tech is also making sunscreens lighter, smoother, and easier to wear without losing protection.

Think elegant lotions instead of chalky pastes. Again, I don’t mind the chalky pastes… I mean, it’s just looks FFS!

DIY inspiration (because, ha, why not?)

Want to play at home?

Try this simple mineral sunscreen base:

  • Non-nano zinc oxide (20%) → SPF 30+
  • Coconut oil or shea butter → nourishing base
  • Carrot seed oil (a few drops) → antioxidant boost
  • Optional: iron oxide → for a natural tint

Blend carefully until smooth, apply evenly, and always patch test first.

Keep in mind homemade sunscreens may vary in protection, so limit direct sun exposure and reapply often.

Do some more research if you want to go DIY, but with the above you should be able to enjoy skin protection without the premium price tag.

Where we go from here

2025 feels different because consumers are smarter. We’re no longer falling for celebrity hype or over-engineered formulas.

At least I hope you’re not!

The brands winning are those making effective, ethical, reasonably-priced sunscreens. The ones losing are still trying to convince us that higher price = better results.

It’s not true. Simple, plant-based protection works.

So, yes, it is refreshing to finally see products that respect both our skin and our intelligence.

Thank you very much.

Let’s keep pushing for better, because accessible, ethical skincare shouldn’t be revolutionary.

It should be standard people!

Love,

Patri xx
