The honest evidence picture
Let’s lay out what the research actually shows, because that matters more here than anywhere else.

Mallow has one of the longer documented histories of any backyard European plant, with mentions in ancient Greek and Roman writing going back over two thousand years, long before anyone understood mucilage at a molecular level. - Applying too much to the roots. A little goes a long way. Too much near the scalp leaves fine hair looking weighed down and greasy by lunchtime.
- Letting any water get into the jar, even a splash from wet hands while straining. One drop is often all it takes to start mould weeks later.

- Patch test the finished oil on your inner arm and wait 24 to 48 hours before applying it to your scalp, particularly if you have sensitive skin or plant allergies.
- Anyone with a known allergy to plants in the Malvaceae family should avoid mallow altogether.
- Because this is an oil infusion, not a preserved, tested formulation, treat it like any homemade product: use within its shelf life, store properly, discard if the scent, colour, or texture changes.

Worth knowing: that unmistakable “off,” slightly crayon-like smell of a rancid oil comes from aldehydes, the same broad group of compounds behind the stale, cardboard-like smell of old crisps left too long in the cupboard. If your mallow oil starts smelling like that, discard the batch rather than try to mask it, no matter how much plant material went into making it.
And a quick myth to retire while we’re on storage: adding a drop of vitamin E to a homemade oil slows down rancidity, but it isn’t a preservative.
