Into DIY Anti-Aging Oils? Read This Before Using Your Current Oils

If you’re making your own anti-aging skin care, choosing the right carrier oils is… well, everything.

Get it wrong, and your serum or current choice of oil might not do much for wrinkles, hydration, or glow.

I’m a cosmetic formulator, and after working with countless natural ingredients, I can tell you—not all oils are equal when it comes to natural anti-aging.

If this is your first time using natural oils, keep going! I remember my first time—it can feel a little overwhelming, like you might get it wrong. But if you start with the right oils and keep it simple, you’ll get the hang of it. I promise, your skin will love the results!

Some oils sit on the skin without real benefits, while others help keep skin smooth, firm, and healthy.

So before you buy your next DIY anti-aging oil, let’s go through the three best carrier oils that actually work.

Why Face Oils Are the Best Kept Anti-Aging Secret

A good face oil can do more than a moisturiser—it helps lock in hydration, smooth fine lines, and support healthy aging.

Many commercial anti-aging creams rely on occlusives (ingredients that sit on top of the skin), but natural carrier oils absorb better and provide real nourishment.

Assortment of different DIY oils for skin and hair
My assortment of oils didn’t happen overnight. I started with just one, saw the benefits, and kept going.

In fact, the right DIY anti-aging oil blend can:

  • Reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face
  • Improve skin elasticity
  • Keep skin hydrated without clogging pores
  • Support a glowing, healthy complexion

But not all face oils are ideal for anti-aging. Some are too heavy, others don’t absorb well… and a few can even make wrinkles look worse!

Essential oils kit
Introducing you to some of my essential oils.

Below are the three best carrier oils for DIY anti-aging—each one carefully chosen for its hydrating, smoothing, and brightening benefits.

If You Want Smoother, Firmer Skin, The Below Oil Is the One for You!

There’s a reason rosehip oil is one of the most talked-about anti-aging face oils—and no, it’s not just hype.

If you’re dealing with fine lines, uneven skin tone, or loss of firmness, this oil delivers real results, trust me.

Rosehip oil is RICH in trans-retinoic acid (a naturally occurring form of vitamin A that supports skin cell renewal—essential for keeping skin looking fresh and smooth).

Unlike synthetic retinol, it’s gentler and doesn’t cause as much irritation, making it ideal for natural anti-aging skin care. Check my article here on alternatives to retinol, by the way.

Rosehip oil is also packed with:
✔️ Essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) – Help strengthen the skin barrier, keeping moisture locked in for a plumper, healthier look.
✔️ Antioxidants (including vitamin C) – Protect against free radical damage, one of the biggest culprits behind wrinkles and dull skin.
✔️ Collagen-supporting compounds – Help maintain skin elasticity, so skin stays firmer for longer.

Here’s How to Use Rosehip Oil for Anti-Aging

For the best results, apply rosehip oil to DAMP skin so it absorbs effectively (use it as a standalone face oil or mix it into a DIY anti-aging serum).

  • Morning: Apply 2-3 drops before your moisturiser. It works well under sunscreen and doesn’t leave a greasy finish.
  • Night: Use it as the final step in your routine to support overnight skin repair.
  • With other oils: Blend it with hydrating oils like the next one on this list for a more balanced formula.

Here’s a Pro Tip You’ll Like:

If your skin is prone to dullness or uneven tone, try adding 1 drop of rosehip oil to your foundation or moisturiser. It gives a smoother finish and an extra hydration boost.

Caution: When NOT to Use Rosehip Oil

Here’s when NOT to use rosehip oil. Please take note!

  • If you’re using retinol or prescription vitamin A (rosehip already contains a form of retinoic acid, so combining it with other retinol-based treatments can cause irritation or sensitivity).
  • If you have very oily, acne-prone skin – While lightweight, rosehip can still clog pores in some acne-prone skin types. Patch test first.
  • If it smells off – Rosehip oil has a short shelf life and oxidises quickly! If it smells rancid or changes colour, it’s time to replace it.

HERE’S MY RECOMMENDED ROSEHIP OIL!

rosehip seed oil
Rosehip oil is a game-changer for smooth, healthy skin. Packed with natural vitamin A and essential fatty acids, it helps soften fine lines, even out skin tone, and keep your skin looking fresh.

If Your Skin Feels Dry and Tight, The Below Oil Brings It Back to Life!

When it comes to deep hydration without clogging pores, baobab oil is one of the best-kept secrets in natural anti-aging skin care.

You didn’t know about this oil? If is very rich and nourishing for your skin. If your skin ever feels tight, flaky, or just lacking that healthy bounce, this oil is what you need.

Baobab oil is rich in:
✔️ Omega-3, -6, and -9 fatty acids – Strengthen the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss, keeping skin soft and supple.
✔️ Phytosterols – Help support skin regeneration and keep hydration levels balanced.
✔️ Vitamins A, D, E, and F – These work together to nourish the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and protect against environmental stressors.

Unlike heavier oils, baobab absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy film, making it a great choice for both dry and combination skin types.

Here’s How to Use Baobab Oil for Anti-Aging

This oil works best when used on damp skin or layered under a DIY anti-aging cream.

  • Morning: Apply 2-3 drops after cleansing, before your moisturiser.
  • Night: Massage into the skin before bed for an overnight hydration boost.
  • Mixing: Pairs well with rosehip oil for a balanced anti-aging blend.

A Pro Tip:

Baobab oil is EXCELLENT for a DIY face massage! A few drops allow your fingers to glide over the skin without pulling, helping to boost circulation and support skin elasticity. Oh, and enjoy the process. There’s nothing like a good facial massage in my opinion.

Caution: When NOT to Use Baobab Oil

Here’s when NOT to use baobab oil or when to be extra careful:

  • If you have extremely sensitive skin (rare, but some people may experience irritation. Always patch test first).
  • If your pores clog easily – Although baobab is considered non-comedogenic, everyone’s skin reacts differently. If you notice congestion, reduce how often you use it.
  • If it’s exposed to heat or light – Baobab oil is delicate and can lose its benefits quickly if stored improperly. Keep it in a cool, dark place. I usually keep delicate oils in the fridge. They also last a lot longer this way.

HERE’S MY RECOMMENDED BABOBAB OIL.

Here’s my babobab oil Baobab seed oil It is pure hydration in a bottle. If your skin ever feels dry or tight, this oil helps lock in moisture, leaving it soft, nourished, and comfortable.

If Your Skin Looks Dull or Uneven, The Below Oil Helps Brighten and Smooth

If you’re looking for glowing, even-toned skinpomegranate seed oil is the one to reach for.

This oil is known for its ability to reduce the appearance of dark spots, brighten dull skin, and support skin elasticity, making it a MUST-HAVE for natural anti-aging skin care.

Pomegranate seed oil is packed with:
✔️ Punicalagins (powerful antioxidants) – Help protect skin from free radical damage, which speeds up the aging process and causes wrinkles and uneven tone.
✔️ Ellagic acid – Supports collagen production and helps reduce hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage.
✔️ Omega-5 (punicic acid) – A rare fatty acid that deeply nourishes and soothes the skin while improving its overall texture.

This oil is lightweight yet deeply moisturising, making it ideal for all skin types, including sensitive and mature skin.

Here’s How to Use Pomegranate Seed Oil for Anti-Aging

This oil works best as part of your morning and evening skin care routine.

  • Morning: Apply 1-2 drops before sunscreen for added antioxidant protection.
  • Night: Use as a last step to help repair skin while you sleep.
  • Mixing: Pomegranate seed oil pairs beautifully with rosehip and baobab oil for a complete anti-aging face oil blend.

Note: Pomegranate seed oil is quite thick and syrupy compared to other oils, thanks to its special fatty acid makeup (especially punicic acid). Since it’s so viscous, it’s best applied by warming a few drops between your palms and gently pressing onto damp skin.

Pro Tip:

If you’re dealing with dark spots or uneven skin tone, mix pomegranate seed oil with a vitamin C serum for an extra brightening effect.

Caution: When NOT to Use Pomegranate Seed Oil

Here’s when not to use this oil:

  • If your skin is very oily – This oil is rich and nourishing, which may feel too heavy for extremely oily skin types.
  • If you have nut allergies – While not a tree nut, pomegranate oil comes from seeds, so it’s always best to patch test first.
  • If it’s expired – Pomegranate seed oil is prone to oxidation. If it smells off or has changed in colour, replace it with a fresh bottle.

HERE’S MY RECOMMENDED POMEGRANATE SEED OIL.

Half a pomegranate
Pomegranate seed oil is your go-to for bright, even-toned skin. Rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, it helps smooth fine lines, support collagen, and give your skin a natural glow.

Learn How to Make the Perfect DIY Anti-Aging Face Oil Blend!

Now you are armed with the facts when it comes to the best anti aging oils.

So, you’re ready to make your blend. It is very, very easy. It literally is just a mix of the oils.

It is important to know that a good DIY anti-aging face oil should do three things: hydrate, smooth, and brighten. And our 3 oils do just that.

DIY Anti-Aging Face Oil Recipe

✔️ 10 ml rosehip oil – Helps smooth wrinkles and supports skin renewal
✔️ 10 ml baobab oil – Deeply hydrates and strengthens the skin barrier
✔️ 10 ml pomegranate seed oil – Helps brighten skin and protect against free radical damage
✔️ (Optional) 3-5 drops of essential oil (see below for the best options)

Dark bottles aren’t just for looks—they protect your oils! Light and heat can break down their nutrients, so always store your oils in amber or blue glass to keep them fresh and effective.

Best Essential Oils for Anti-Aging (Optional, but Effective!)

If you want to boost the benefits of your face oil, you can add a few drops of an essential oil. Here are some of the best options:

  • Frankincense – Supports skin elasticity and helps with fine lines
  • Geranium – Helps balance oil production and improve skin tone
  • Lavender – Soothes redness and supports skin repair

(Stick to a maximum of 5 drops total per 30 ml to keep it skin-safe.)

How to Make It:

  1. Pour all carrier oils into a 30 ml amber glass bottle (dark glass helps prevent oxidation).
  2. Add essential oils (if using), then swirl gently to mix.
  3. Store in a cool, dark place to keep the oils fresh.

Massage Techniques to Help Your Skin Absorb the Oil

Massaging your oil in helps improve absorption and circulation, making the most of your anti-aging routine. Here’s how:

✔️ The Upward Sweep – Use gentle, upward strokes with your fingers to lift and smooth the skin.
✔️ The Tap & Press – Press your palms against your face for a few seconds to help the oil penetrate deeper.
✔️ The Jawline Sculpt – Use your knuckles to glide along the jawline from chin to ears, helping to reduce tension and firm the skin.

A quick 1-2 minute massage before bed can make a huge difference in how well your skin absorbs the oils—plus, it feels like a mini facial.

Final Anti-Aging Tips: Get the Most Out of Your Face Oils

Benefit of Frankincense Oil on Face

Using the right carrier oils is a great start, but for the best results, your whole skin care routine matters. Here’s how to make sure your DIY anti-aging face oil works as well as possible:

✔️ Apply to damp skin – Oils work best when skin is slightly damp, helping to lock in hydration and absorb properly.

✔️ Be consistent – Natural skin care takes time. Stick with your routine for at least 4-6 weeks to see visible improvements.

✔️ Protect your skin from sun damage – No anti-aging oil can undo daily UV exposure. Always wear sunscreen to prevent wrinkles and uneven skin tone.

✔️ Don’t skip exfoliation – Dead skin buildup can stop oils from absorbing properly. Use a gentle exfoliator (like lactic acid or an enzyme-based exfoliant) 1-2 times a week to keep skin smooth.

✔️ Hydrate from the inside out – Drinking enough water and eating antioxidant-rich foods (like berries, nuts, and greens) can help support healthy aging from within.

Pro Tip:

If you’re layering multiple products, apply your face oil last (unless you’re using a thicker cream on top). Oils help seal in moisture, so they should always go on after water-based serums and moisturisers.

Some Final Thoughts

Wow, you got here! That means you’re serious about natural anti-aging, and honestly, your skin is going to thank you for it.

By now, you know that not all oils are created equal. You could throw together any mix of carrier oils and call it a face serum, but if you want real results, it’s worth choosing the right ones.

With rosehip for smoothing, baobab for hydration, and pomegranate seed oil for brightening, you’ve got a powerful trio that works with your skin, not just on it.

✔️ Keep it simple – No need for long ingredient lists. Fresh, high-quality oils are all you need.
✔️ Apply to damp skin – This one makes all the difference for absorption and hydration.
✔️ Massage it in – Just a minute of gentle massage boosts circulation and helps the oils work even better.
✔️ Store it properly – Light and heat break down oils faster. Keep your blend in a cool, dark place so it stays fresh.

If you’ve been searching for the best anti-aging face oils, now you’ve got them. Whether you’re making a DIY serum for the first time or tweaking your routine, this blend is the perfect place to start.

So go on—give it a try, be consistent, and let your skin do the talking.
