Toxin-Free Beauty: The Switch List You Need

I write so you share. Thank you.

Welcome to the switch-up: toxic out, natural in.

Those skincare products on the shelves? Packed with stuff our skin never asked for. I’m over brands cramming in chemicals for longer shelf lives, all while padding their pockets. It’s simple, really. Nature’s got it all – the nourishment, the glow, the remedy. No need for the extras that just weigh us down.

And the fillers? They are just there to bulk up profits, not benefits.

It’s time to cut the clutter. Out with the bad – parabens, phthalates, the whole petro gang. This isn’t a trend; it’s our commitment.

Let’s roll up our sleeves and check out my the swap list below – your cheat sheet to keeping it clean and natural.

**I’m vegan, so I avoided adding honey to the list of natural ingredients 🤷🏽‍♀️**

1. Preservatives & stabilisers

Conventional beauty products often rely on synthetic preservatives and stabilisers to prolong shelf life and maintain texture. However, some of these chemicals have been linked to skin irritation and more serious health concerns. Here’s the list of offenders:

Out with the synthetic!

  • Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, etc.): Widely used preservatives that mimic estrogen and have been found in breast tumour tissue.
  • Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde Donors (DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea): Used to prevent bacteria growth, these chemicals can release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
  • Phenoxyethanol: Common in “natural” products, it’s restricted in the EU due to potential links to skin irritation and nervous system effects.

In with the natural!

  • Vitamin E (Tocopherol): A natural antioxidant that helps preserve the shelf life of products.
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract: Known for its antimicrobial properties (though effectiveness as a preservative is debated).
  • Fermented Radish Root (Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate): A natural preservative derived from radishes fermented with lactic acid bacteria.
  • Rosemary Extract: Not only does it have antioxidant benefits for the skin, but it also extends the shelf life of oils in formulations.

2. Emollients & moisturisers

A staple in skincare, emollients and moisturisers keep our skin hydrated, soft, and supple. While traditional options often rely on synthetic ingredients derived from petroleum or harsh chemicals, there are plenty of natural alternatives that are kinder to your skin and the environment.

Out with the synthetic!

  • Mineral Oil: A petroleum by-product that can clog pores and prevent the skin from breathing.
  • Dimethicone: A silicone-based polymer used for its silky feel, but it can trap dirt and sebum.
  • Petrolatum (Petroleum Jelly): Used for its barrier properties, but concerns exist about its purity and the environmental impact of petroleum extraction.

In with the natural!

  • Jojoba Oil: Mimics the skin’s natural oils for deep hydration without clogging pores.
  • Shea Butter: Rich in vitamins and fatty acids, it’s a powerful moisturizer and skin healer.
  • Cocoa Butter: A natural fat that provides excellent moisture and creates a barrier to protect the skin from moisture loss.
  • Almond Oil: Easily absorbed and full of vitamin E, it’s ideal for soothing dry skin.

Surfactants & cleansers

Surfactants are key ingredients in cleansers, shampoos, and soaps, helping to remove dirt and oil. However, many common surfactants can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Natural alternatives can clean effectively without compromising the skin’s barrier.

Out with the synthetic!

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): Harsh detergents known for their deep cleaning properties but can irritate skin and scalp.
  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES): Similar to SLES, with potential for skin irritation and dryness.
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine: A foaming agent that can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. (THIS IS SOLD AS NATURAL IN MANY PRODUCTS, IT’S NOT AS HARSH AS THE ABOVE BUT BE CAREFUL!)

In with the natural!

  • Coco Glucoside: A gentle cleanser derived from coconut oil and fruit sugars, suitable for all skin types.
  • Decyl Glucoside: Mild and biodegradable, derived from corn glucose and perfect for sensitive skin.
  • Castile Soap: Made from plant oils, it’s gentle on the skin and can be used in a variety of cleaning products.
  • Saponified Oils (Olive, Coconut, etc.): Naturally occurring soap made by the saponification process of oils and fats, offering a gentle cleanse.

Sunscreen agents

Protecting skin from harmful UV rays is essential, but many conventional sunscreens contain chemicals that can be harsh on the skin and harmful to marine life. Natural mineral-based sunscreens offer effective protection without these downsides.

Out with the synthetic!

  • Oxybenzone and Octinoxate: UV filters with potential hormone-disrupting effects and significant coral reef damage.

Many conventional hair dyes contain harsh chemicals that can damage hair and irritate the scalp, with some linked to serious health concerns. Natural hair dyes offer a gentler alternative, colouring your locks without compromising your health.

Out with the synthetic!

  • Para-phenylenediamine (PPD): A common ingredient that helps dyes penetrate the hair shaft but can cause allergic reactions and is linked to health risks.
  • Ammonia: Opens the hair cuticle to allow colour in but can severely damage the hair and irritate the respiratory system.
  • Resorcinol: Binds the dye to the hair but can irritate skin and is a potential endocrine disruptor.

In with the natural!

  • Henna: Derived from the Lawsonia inermis plant, it provides a range of colors from red to brown and even black, while conditioning the hair.
  • Indigo: Often used in combination with henna to achieve darker shades, it’s a natural dye that offers deep blue and black tones.
  • Cassia Obovata: Sometimes called “neutral henna,” it doesn’t impart much color but can add shine and volume to hair.
  • Beetroot and Carrot Juice: For temporary red tints, these vegetable juices can enhance hair color naturally.

Bleaching agents

Conventional bleaching agents in skincare and hair products can be harsh, potentially causing damage and irritation. Natural alternatives provide a safer way to achieve brightening effects without compromising skin or hair health.

Out with the synthetic!

  • Hydroquinone: Widely used for skin lightening, it can cause irritation and has raised concerns about carcinogenicity.
  • Benzoyl Peroxide: Used in acne treatments and hair bleaching, it can excessively dry and irritate the skin.

Now you KNOW

We’ve done the groundwork, laying out a swap list that’s more than a good start. It’s a GUIDE for those ready to shake up their beauty routine, ditching the dubious for the downright natural.

But let’s not kid ourselves; the list of nasties lurking in our cosmetics is longer than a drugstore receipt.

And the natural ingredients list is a lot longer and wonderful than what I wrote above but there’s no room for everything here. At least you have an idea on what to look out for.

So, what’s a savvy consumer to do? Arm yourself with knowledge, for starters. Our swap list is solid, but it’s just the beginning.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Words that end in “-paraben”
  • Anything starting with “PEG”
  • Fragrance or parfum (unless specified as natural)
  • Long, unpronounceable chemical names (the longer, the dodgier)

And remember, questioning is paramount. Not sure about an ingredient? Ask at the counter. Stil not sure? Internet. Still stumped? Ask on the Oh Mighty Health Facebook page. Ignorance isn’t bliss when it comes to what we slather on our skin.

Consider this article your nudge, your starting block, your call to arms.

The switch to natural isn’t just a personal win; it’s a victory lap for the environment too.

And with this guide, you’re well-equipped to start making choices that feel as good as they look.
