Our Stunning 8Km ‘Mamio Walk’ in La Caldera
We are very lucky to live in Tenerife. There are so many areas for walking, it is unreal. I don’t think we have enough years left to cover them all (and I don’t mean this in a ‘poor us’ way, but more as a way to show how abundant this small island is when it comes to the natural way of living (and walking is most definitely one of the activities we’ve taken on – together with making our own DIY skincare and treating a lot of bodily ills with our own herbal remedies among other things. More on that on other blog posts though.
We’ve done this route before – 8km taking one of the roads off La Caldera (a wide, huge ‘hole’ in the middle of the forest area on the way up to Las Cañadas). Route starts in La Caldera, taking the ‘Mamio’ walk.
Below, in love with our new walking shoes, which make our lives a lot easier when we go to the forest areas in Tenerife.
We took quite a few photos of this beautiful Mamio route; the quality of some of the photos is not great because I’m aware of Internet speeds and loading times (they’re all under 100k). But you still get to appreciate the tremendous beauty.
There’s me below, proud of our walk (prior to starting).
Lynn and I are learning about different routes trying to compile a few that we can quickly plan throughout the week. Some routes are obviously more complicated than others (or further away or longer, etc) so we need to plan ahead according to the day and time we have for walking on that day.
Weekends, for example, are great for the longer walks. Saturday mornings are good for going all the way to Las Cañadas and doing the different walking routes there (no less than 37 so far, I found a GREAT link here)
Below, la ‘Casa del Agua’ (House of Water), which is part of the Mamio route.
The photo below shows part of the ‘Valle de La Orotava‘. The photo really doesn’t show the beauty we enjoyed on the day. It was sunny and the sky was incredibly blue.
At just before 4km we stopped, knowing we would make it almost to the 8km on our way back. Below our rucksacks – we’re getting new ones, more appropriate for these types of walks, soon.
Look at the spectacular trees… stunning!
Teide peeking through the hills.
Below, Lynn : )
Part of the walk was a little hard for us, we were trying to keep up! And we did. Yes, we did well! : )
I found this video showing part of the route. Enjoy.
