DIY Lip Balm: The EASIEST DIY Lip Balm Recipe in The World (My Favourite Recipe!)

I write so you share. Thank you.

I’ve made several lip balm recipes but there’s one particular recipe that I ABSOLUTELY love (as well as the people I’ve given it to try).

It’s SO SIMPLE!

EASY DIY LIP BALM RECIPE INGREDIENTS

Just 3 ingredients, that’s all.

  • 4 parts organic mango butter (get it here)
  • 4 parts organic coconut oil (get it here)
  • 2 parts organic beeswax (get it here)
4 parts organic mango butter
4 parts coconut oil
2 parts beeswax

So, let’s say you’re making 5 ounces of lip balm, the amounts should go as follows:

  • 2 ounces organic mango butter (get it here)
  • 2 ounces organic coconut oil (get it here)
  • 1 ounces organic beeswax (get it here)

That’s it!

Optional Extra Ingredients

  • To slow down rancidity of the oil and butter you can add a few drops of natural Vitamin E (only if you’re making a large batch – get vitamin E here)
  • Want it to have an aroma and the benefits of an essential oil? Add a few drops of mandarin essential oil (get it here) which is beautifully sweet and citrusy as well as uplifting. Please take into account that you have to be careful when it comes to adding essential oils to your DIY skin care. Use this scale and add only 0.4% of essential oil of the total weight of the rest of your ingredients. Add the essential oil when the mix is just starting to thicken a little bit as essential oils are volatile and can evaporate under high heat.

As I said, I LOVE this recipe which my friend Coba gave to me when doing my Institute of International Dermocosmetics course in Castellón, Spain.

How to Make Your DIY Lip Balm

I use a wax warmer to melt everything (easy!)
  • Weigh your ingredients first
  • Melt your ingredients together. I use a wax warmer (you can get it here) but you can also melt using the Bain Marie (also known as double boiler) method
  • Stir as the mix melts to make sure the ingredients are properly combined (I use glass rods for mixing)
  • Switch off wax warmer while stirring occasionally as the mix cools down (it will start to get thicker). This is the time to start pouring the mix onto the containers (don’t wait too long otherwise the mix will get too thick. If this happens, just warm the mix up again).
  • If you’re adding the mandarin essential oil, make sure to add it as the mix starts to thicken (by now the mix is cooler. Essential oils are volatile and can evaporate under high heat)
  • Pour onto containers like these ones. These are very similar to the ones I usually use although on the pic below I’m using a plastic containers since I make little testers at home. I do try to avoid plastic as much as possible in general though!
I absolutely love this formula. It is so simple and it works much better than my other lip balm formulas.

That’s it.

Wait until they mix is hardens and cap.

You will love this lip balm.

Ingredient Substitutions

For those looking to avoid beeswax, there are excellent plant-based alternatives! Try Candelilla Wax or Carnauba Wax. Both are derived from plants and provide a similar firm texture, perfect for a vegan or plant-based lip balm. Replace beeswax in the same ratio, and you’ll still get that ideal consistency!

Storage Tips

Once your lip balm has hardened, it’s best to store it in a cool, dark place to keep it fresh. This balm can last 6-12 months if stored properly. Avoid leaving it in hot areas like a car or near direct sunlight, as high temperatures can soften or melt the balm.

Additional Customization Options

Want to switch up the scent? Try adding a few drops of essential oils like Lavender, Peppermint, or Sweet Orange. These not only smell lovely but add their own skin-soothing benefits. Just remember, for lip balms, add essential oils at a concentration of 0.4% to ensure safety.

Usage Tips

To keep lips soft and hydrated, apply the balm 1-3 times a day or as needed. This balm creates a protective barrier that locks in moisture and shields your lips from dryness and harsh weather. Perfect for both summer and winter!

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If your balm ends up too hard, don’t worry! You can remelt it and add a bit more coconut oil. If it’s too soft, remelt and add a bit more wax. Lip balm consistency can vary based on climate, so adjust these ingredients to your preference.

Safety Note on Essential Oils

When adding essential oils to lip balms, remember that not all are safe for lip application. Stick to gentle oils like Mandarin, Lavender, or Sweet Orange. Avoid phototoxic oils (like bergamot) or strong oils (like cinnamon). Always patch test new products, especially if you have sensitive skin.

User-Friendly Measurements

If “parts” feel too abstract, here’s a beginner-friendly version of the recipe in tablespoons:

  • 2 tbsp Mango Butter
  • 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tbsp Beeswax (or Candelilla Wax)

This should yield a small batch that’s great for testing out the recipe before committing to larger amounts.

Benefits of Each Ingredient

Each ingredient in this lip balm offers unique benefits:

  • Mango Butter – Rich in vitamins A and E, providing deep nourishment and hydration.
  • Coconut Oil – Known for its softening and antimicrobial properties, making lips feel smooth and conditioned.
  • Beeswax/Candelilla Wax – Forms a protective barrier, locking in moisture and keeping lips safe from environmental damage.

These ingredients work together to create a lip balm that’s both protective and deeply hydrating!

Sustainable Packaging Options

For eco-friendly packaging, try using metal tins or glass jars. These materials are reusable and much better for the environment than plastic. If you’re making a larger batch, consider gifting in these sustainable containers for a thoughtful touch!
