Stopping Hair Loss in Its Tracks – How to Kick Hair Loss from your Kitchen

I write so you share. Thank you.

Want to try stopping hair loss in its tracks with nothing more than fruits, herbs and veggies?

If you’re experiencing hair loss, you might have realised just how much you take your hair for granted as part of your own personal self-image. To make matters worse, as women we’re often judged harshly on our appearance.

I was struck by the number of DIY hair treatments that come straight from the grocery store. Their creators have written the recipes with hair loss in mind and while I can’t promise any of them will work for you, it’s amazing to see what plain old fresh produce can do!

Juices, Smoothies & Hair Rinses, Oh My!

Let’s take a look at the juices, smoothies and hair rinses available before finding out step by step how to make a green juice to detox your hair and promote growth.

You should always seek medical advice about health concerns. Have you got a special diet you need to follow, foods to avoid or any other considerations? Then it goes without saying, these factors are the top priority.

If you’re good to go, let’s find out how to prevent loss and nourish your hair after 40 from your kitchen.

Feed Your Hair

Coconuts and Kettlebells have put together a recipe for this simple apple cider vinegar rinse, made with just 3 ingredients – 2-4 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar, 16 oz cool water and an optional 1-2 drops lavender oil.

Now for the big question, can it beat hair loss in women over 40? According to LIVESTRONG, this simple rinse could make a real difference. Apple cider vinegar’s antibacterial properties fight any bacterial causes of hair loss that could be clogging up the follicles, but that’s not all. This wholesome-sounding treatment also helps with circulation.

Add the raw apple cider vinegar, water and if you’re using it, lavender oil, to a clean, empty bottle. Coconuts and Kettlebells suggest starting out with 2 tbsp and working your way up if you need more vinegar power. Shampoo and rinse your hair as normal, then pour the liquid over. Leave it for a couple of minutes then rinse.

As well as the action of the apple cider, using aromatherapy oils including lavender massaged into the scalp helped 44% of participants to see noticeable results in the 1998 study – it’s thought the massaging itself may help you to regain a lush head of hair.

Recipes for Success

Are you cutting out carbs? They’ve been much maligned over the last couple of decades but according to the Institute of Trichologists, they’re actually essential to healthy hair production.

“Carbohydrates are important nutrients for your hair” – Marilyn Sherlock, chairman of the Institute of Trichologists

One of the remedies for hair loss in women over 40 is so simple but potentially effective – according to nutritionists and hair specialists, the right food could improve your hair’s growth and condition. I think this advice could be very easy to adopt, after all you’re most likely already eating three meals a day. You might as well choose something that could make a difference.

Boost your iron levels, get some protein and eat your five-a-day – all at the same time. Try this lasagne for protein, carbs and iron, Italian style.

Blitzing for Biotin

If you want to get on board the smoothie bandwagon, Spafinder Wellness 365 have whipped up a biotin smoothie with bananas, almond milk, nut butter, bok choi and seeds.

BBC Good Food’s associate nutritionist, Jo Lewin, wants to let us know that the key to healthy hair is eating a combination of the right foods. That means getting plenty of protein, vitamins and minerals, and biotin.

Vitamin H or biotin is part of the B group, and you’ll find it locked inside nuts, wholegrains, legumes, egg yolks and bananas – although the University of Maryland advise that it’s not been strongly proven as a hair loss solution.

Dr Jacqueline Shaeffer’s fruit smoothie drink sets out to improve the condition of hair as well as encouraging the hair to grow. This sounds like it could be really useful in tackling hair thinning in women over 40 thanks to its focus on encouraging strength and condition.

All you need is a cucumber, half an avocado and a cup of blueberries. Chop the cucumber into discs, scoop out the flesh of the avocado and add to the blender or juicer, finally adding the berries. The proanthocyanadins in blueberries are thought to encourage hair growth, and cucumber is full of hair-nourishing components too.

“Cucumber contains ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and caffeic acid, fiber, along with minerals like silica, potassium and magnesium… Eating cucumber as part of a healthy diet will be good for the health and hair in general.” – Belgravia Heath Centre

Made with ginger, cayenne or your choice of chili, kale and more besides, this all-in-one juice is jam-packed good-news fruits and veggies. Certified Detoxification Specialist Dan ‘The Life Regenerator’ McDonald made his name on his own raw food-centred YouTube channel.

His blended raw food drink is designed to promote healthy hair growth through nutrients, which isn’t a bad philosophy. Could it work for you? If you want to give it a try, here’s the ‘how to’…

What You Need:

  • Juicer
  • Large glass jar
  • Bunch of kale
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 fresh ginger root
  • 1 apple
  • 1 handful fresh parsley
  • 1 handful fresh cilantro/coriander
  • 1 stick of celery
  • Pinch of cayenne
  • (Optional chili to taste)

1. Start with a Scrumptious Apple, Ginger and Lemon Base

Blend the whole unpeeled apple, some peeled ginger and lemon together. If you’ve got a juicer rather than a regular blender, it will come into its own here!

According to the recipe’s creator, Dan McDonald, the ginger is there to boost circulation while the apple is included for taste – but it could also help encourage hair growth. A 2002 Japanese study found that the procyanidin B-2 in the popular fruit made a difference in lab trials.

2. Add some Leafy Goodness

Got those lovely, leafy bunches of kale and parsley? No need to chop, just wash and add a handful of each to your juicer and blend into the apple and ginger mixture.

The vitamin C and iron in kale is thought to help with hair loss. Department for Agriculture research suggests that while kale is healthy you shouldn’t consume high quantities every day – check out the facts for yourself here.

3. An Extra Green Boost for Your Juice

Drop in the cilantro/coriander and celery and blend. Again, no need to chop though you know your blender or juicer better than anyone else – the original recipe doesn’t require it though.

Why are we adding coriander? I hadn’t heard this hair tip before but it turns out it’s rich in vitamins A and K, fibre, iron, folate and potassium. You can add chili if you want to, though the heat level is up to you.

4. Pour and Add Some Natural Heat

Have you got a smooth liquid? Once it’s ready, pour your green smoothie from blender to jar and add just a little cayenne.

As with the optional chili, Dan McDonald says cayenne is added to help improve circulation, and he’s not alone in promoting the pepper for hair growth – it’s thought that the capsaicin and quercetin in haven’t been strongly proven.

5. Grab a Glass Jar

And that’s it, you’re done! It makes a fairly large quantity, so I was interested to know just how long it would last.

The Juicer Fanatics say that green juices are best consumed within 20 minutes, so what happens if you’re not quite hungry or thirsty enough to get through a whole juice in one go?

Don’t worry, it doesn’t need to go to waste. They recommend using a good quality juicer that limits oxidisation, a glass storage jar and immediate refrigeration – they can stay good for up to 72 hours.

Ready to Whip Up a Delicious Remedy?

I enjoy cooking and picking out good quality ingredients for food, but I can’t believe just how easy it could be to combine a long list of recommended vitamins and minerals in one juice.

All these remedies for hair loss in women over 40 are natural and they’re certainly easy to try for yourself at home so you just might find the answer to regaining your self-image. As always, check with your health professional before making any changes.

Now that you’ve seen what goes into these kitchen remedies, are you going to try stopping hair loss in its tracks?
