The Ancient Art of Herbal Medicine

I write so you share. Thank you.

The more I do herbal courses the more I want to leave good quality information about the ancient art of herbal medicine here on Oh Mighty Health. The idea is that I make this website a pool of information I would love to stumble upon if I was wanting to learn about herbs and herbal medicine in general.

Organising the entries is not easy – there’s a category for herbal remedies, a category for herbs monographs, a category for general herbal related articles and so on. But for all the categories here on Oh Mighty Health (Natural Skincare, Aromatherapy, etc) I always wanted to have a group of posts dedicated to the basics of each discipline (natural skincare/beauty, essential oils/aromatherapy, herbs/herbal medicine) so everyone that comes to the site can have access to a solid base packed with incredibly informative articles.

Will I be able to succeed with my plan? I have no idea. It is a very ambitious project and there’s a lot of information that I would need to gather in order to fulfil this plan. But, hey, I’ll try! I’m still in my 50s and I hopefully have enough time to gather all the information so in my next incarnation I can dive into Oh Mighty Health and learn everything all over again… from just one place. And, hey, at least it’s the info I find most interesting to learn so I’m sure a future Patri will be VERY grateful indeed!

Enough talk. Let’s get started.

Intro to the Ancient Art of Herbal Medicine

By the time I’m writing this intro I haven’t completed any of my herbal courses but I’m well immersed in one of them. Just started another one and hopefully will get on with doing herbs monographs from yet another course I’m doing.

I’m fascinated by herbs and herbal medicine and since my awakening in the summer of 2017 my interest is incredibly profound, almost a need (like breathing). But with extra pleasure added to it. Plants are very much alive and they seem to speak to me, at least now I somehow understand them at a ‘personal’ level, something I never could do before as I was totally immersed in my head and thoughts in general.

My first real encounter with a herb occurred at the beginning of my menopause, when sage became my lover, one could say. On smelling its aroma my body would get very excited and was totally drawn to it. Later I learned that sage is a fantastic herb for menopause and hot flashes. But yes, that was my first encounter with herbs at a deeper level.

Since then I’m trying to learn about each herb, its active constituents, benefits and uses, how to safely use them in the most effective ways.

Healing herbs are something I’d like to specialise in in the future, so hopefully these blog post entries help me as much as they help others.

I will write about the history and roots of herbal medicine, about plant botany (I recommend you buy a hand lense for botany), plant chemistry (and I’m very excited about this!), how to use herbs safely, herbs and body systems (herbs monographs will fall under a different category but when pertinent I’ll link to each monograph), Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, making herbal preparations, herb gardening basics (since I’m living in my homestead La Finca I’ll be proper hands on with many, many plants!).
