The Best Time of Day to Apply Your Skincare Products

I write so you share. Thank you.

Did you know the skin has its own rhythms?

Rather than applying skincare as and when it suits your busy lifestyle, it is best you work around your skin’s very own rhythm in order to be in harmony with your skin. Rather than doing things automatically and out of habit, learn to be ONE with your skin.

For a healthy complexion the best thing is that you and your skin are always working in harmony (synchronised).

Know what times are best for applying certain products and work with your skin’s natural rhythms from now on.

The Skin is Constantly Changing – Yes, Within the Hour

Have you noticed how your facial skin is greasier at certain times of day? This is because the skin can change on almost an hourly basis. Let’s have a look:

MORNINGS

If you suffer from skin allergies you’re most likely to have a reaction in the morning than, let’s say, the evening or afternoon. Also your skin will not absorb as many products in the early hours of the morning so it is best you keep your routine very simple when you get up. Leave your wonderfully packed with great ingredients products for the afternoon!

  • Key Takeaway: Keep it simple in the mornings. Cleanse, tone, moisturise, sunscreen.

MIDDAY

Sebaceous glands are more likely to produce oil around this time. Also, it is not regenerating as much during this time so you might see skin conditions like psoriasis getting worse.

  • Key Takeaway: Keep an eye on your skin, especially if you’re prone to psoriasis or eczema.

AFTERNOON

This is a great time to apply masks and nourishing serums since absorption time is at its best. Masks, oils, treatments rich in nutrients, etc should be applied around 4 or 5pm.

  • Key Takeaway: Apply your favourite masks, serums, hydrators, etc at around 4pm.

AFTERNOON TO LATE EVENING

This is the perfect time to treat yourself to a facial steam since your skin temperature is higher now and your pores will be more open.

  • Key Takeaway: Detox time! Treat yourself to a sauna or facial steam between 4 and 9pm.

NIGHT TIME

You might find skin conditions like dermatitis getting worse due to the skin being more sensitive to histamine around this time. Skin is acidic around this time also which means it will also be oilier when sleeping. Avoid acidic scrubs and peels before going to bed.

Water loss is high so this is the time to apply those rich serums and hydrating creams just before going to bed. The skin gets dry later on, around 2 am so time to also apply rich moisturisers.

  • Key Takeaway: Avoid acidic products and apply moisturising serums, creams and oils.

MIDNIGHT

Between the hours of 9pm to 3am your skin is producing cells (at its highest at midnight).

AFTER MIDNIGHT

The skin gets dry in the early hours of the morning so hopefully you applied moisturising products before going to bed.
