My Top 5 Vitamin E Oils for GLOWING Skin! (And How to Use Each)
Vitamin E oil for skin. Yup, you’ve seen this before (youtube videos, Tik Tok, articles, a friend mentioned something, perhaps you already maybe you’ve heard it from a friend, or seen it in the ingredients list of your favourite skincare product… It’s everywhere!)
So, yes, you see it in so many products, oils, and ingredients… you might know it’s good for your skin, but HOW GOOD is it REALLY?
My experience with Vitamin E oils…
Vitamin E oils have been a STAPLE in my skincare routine for years now (at least since 2018 I’d say).
I can see why it is so praised because of results and also the fact that I use it in virtually all my formulations (by the way, here I wrote an article on Jason Vitamin E oil for skin – the product is a mix of Vitamin E and other lovely oils, you’re welcome to read it if interested).
I can tell you that Vitamin E is truly a GAME-CHANGER for my skin. Just in case you need a reminder of the benefits or you’re not familiar with them, here they are:
- Antioxidant protection (big time!!): Vitamin E helps fight off free radicals that cause skin damage. This means it protects your skin from the effects of pollution and other environmental stressors. [Source]
- Moisturising properties: It acts as an emollient, which means it helps to keep your skin really soft and hydrated. I personally love this.
- Skin barrier support: By helping to maintain the skin’s natural barrier, Vitamin E keeps moisture in and irritants out. This is fantastic because it helps your skin stay healthy, protected, and less prone to irritation, something many people forget about when applying products to their skin.
Can you use PURE Vitamin E oil on your skin?
I will discuss the oils below, but some of you might be wondering if you can use PURE, VITAMIN E OIL on your skin.
The answer is: yes, you can.
Sometimes, I truly believe that “a bit of PURE Vitamin E” is all you need to give that GLOW and smooth, radiant look to your skin.
BUT… it is sticky, viscous, and and it does take a bit of getting used to.
So, instead of using it neat on your skin, I recommend you either mix it with a carrier oil (let’s say 2-3 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil) OR you simply use the oils below as per my directions. That’ll do as they are PACKED with this wonderful vitamin for your skin.
The oils listed below will give you the benefits of the Vitamin E plus other benefits they provide without you having to worry about viscosity. I also show you how to integrate them into your skincare routine, how to apply and how to mix with your moisturiser so they’re easy to enjoy as part of your skincare routine (in case you didn’t want to use them as isolated products).
First, about why I’ve chosen the oils below
I’ve chosen these particular oils because they each bring something DIFFERENT to the table.
While wheat germ oil is the highest in Vitamin E, each oil has its own unique properties that make it suitable for different skin needs. It’s not just about the Vitamin E content—it’s also about what works best for your specific skin type and concerns.
For example:
- Wheat germ oil is fantastic if you need a deeply nourishing oil to tackle dryness.
- Almond oil is amazing for softening and hydrating the skin.
- Hazelnut oil is lightweight and great for those with oily skin, as it provides moisture without clogging pores.
- Sunflower oil is perfect if you’re looking for a light, non-greasy option.
- Cottonseed oil is great for a light, daytime moisturiser that won’t leave you feeling greasy.
Don’t worry too much about the info above because I go into detail on each oil below.
I recommend that you experiment with these oils to see which one works best for your skin type. I wrote below WHO is the oil perfect for, so please PAY ATTENTION and READ CAREFULLY so you can choose the right oil for your skin!!
Each of the below oils has a unique quality that makes it special, and I’ll break down how they work, why I personally love them, and how you can make the most out of them in your routine.
1. Wheat germ oil: the RICHEST in Vitamin E!!
Wheat germ oil is one of the most potent sources of Vitamin E. It’s perfect for giving your skin a nourishing boost and helps protect against environmental damage.
Highest Vitamin E Content: Wheat germ oil is the RICHEST in Vitamin E, with a whopping 20 mg per tablespoon!
- Why I Love It: Wheat germ oil is my go-to when my skin needs an extra dose of love. It’s deeply moisturising, which makes it fantastic for those times when my skin feels dry or looks a little dull.
- How to Use: This oil can be quite thick, so I like to mix it with my favourite moisturiser or even another lighter oil to make it easier to apply. I usually put it on at night for a rich, skin-nourishing experience that works while I sleep.
- Patch Test First: Just a quick note—always patch test first to make sure your skin loves it as much as I do, especially if you have sensitive skin.
👉 Wheat germ oil is PERFECT for:
Those with dry skin looking for INTENSE HYDRATION and nourishment. It’s also great if you want a POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANT BOOST for your skin.
However, if you have oily or sensitive skin, it might feel TOO HEAVY so it’s best to start with a lighter oil!
2. Sweet almond oil: SOFTENING with a Vitamin E boost
Almond oil is well-loved for its ability to soften and hydrate the skin. It’s particularly good for reducing uneven skin tone and adding a natural radiance.
Vitamin E Content: Contains around 5.3 mg per tablespoon.
- Why I Love It: Almond oil has this LOVELY way of softening my skin while giving it the moisture it craves. Plus, it helps even out skin tone and texture, which is perfect for that radiant, healthy look.
- How to Use: I like to apply almond oil after cleansing my face. It’s light enough to use on its own, but sometimes I mix it with a bit of moisturiser for an extra boost. One of my favourite things is to use it for a gentle facial massage—it feels luxurious and helps improve circulation.
- Patch Test First: Always a good idea to patch test to make sure your skin likes it!
👉 Sweet almond oil is PERFECT for:
Anyone wanting to SOFTEN and HYDRATE the skin while reducing uneven skin tone. It’s gentle, making it ideal for many skin types, including normal to dry skin.
However, if your skin is VERY OILY, almond oil could be A BIT MUCH, so consider starting with a lighter option! (see more oils below).
3. Hazelnut oil: Vitamin E for BALANCED skin
Hazelnut oil is ideal for balancing oily skin while still providing moisture. It’s lightweight, non-greasy, and absorbs easily without clogging pores.
Vitamin E Content: Contains about 6.4 mg per tablespoon.
- Why I Love It: Hazelnut oil is AMAZING if you have oily or acne-prone skin. It’s one of those oils that provides moisture without clogging pores, which is why I reach for it when my skin feels out of balance.
- How to Use: I mix a few drops into my moisturiser, or use it on its own when I need a lightweight option. It’s especially great if you have combination skin and want something that feels nourishing but not heavy.
- Patch Test First: You know the drill—patch test first to be safe!
👉 Hazelnut oil is PERFECT for:
Those with oily or acne-prone skin. It’s LIGHTWEIGHT, non-greasy, and ABSORBS EASILY, making it ideal if you need moisture without clogging pores.
However, if your skin is very dry, hazelnut oil might not provide enough hydration on its own…
4. Sunflower oil: LIGHTWEIGHT Vitamin E goodness
Sunflower oil is lightweight and packed with Vitamin E, making it a great option for those who want effective hydration without any heaviness.
Vitamin E Content: Around 5.6 mg per tablespoon.
- Why I Love It: Sunflower oil is incredibly lightweight and absorbs beautifully, which means NO greasy feeling. It’s perfect for keeping my skin hydrated and maintaining its natural barrier—great for those times when I want something light but effective.
- How to Use: I like to apply sunflower oil on clean, damp skin to help lock in moisture. It’s also easy to mix with other products if you want to customise your skincare.
- Patch Test First: Again, patch testing is key—better to be safe than sorry!
👉 Sunflower oil is PERFECT for:
Anyone seeking LIGHT, NON-GREASY hydration. It’s great for keeping your skin hydrated without feeling heavy, making it suitable for all skin types, especially combination or normal.
However, if your skin is extremely dry, sunflower oil might not be enough on its own for deep nourishment.
5. Cottonseed oil: LIGHT, Vitamin E-rich hydration
Cottonseed oil is lightweight and perfect for daytime hydration. It’s easily absorbed and won’t leave your skin feeling greasy.
Vitamin E Content: Contains about 4.8 mg per tablespoon.
- Why I Love It: Cottonseed oil is so LIGHT and easily absorbed—it’s perfect if you want moisture without feeling weighed down. I love using it during the day to keep my skin soft and hydrated.
- How to Use: You can mix a few drops with your regular moisturiser or use it on its own. It’s great for all-day hydration without any heaviness.
- Patch Test First: Always patch test before adding something new to your routine.
👉 Cottonseed oil is PERFECT for:
Those wanting a light daytime moisturiser. It’s EASILY ABSORBED and won’t leave your skin feeling greasy, making it great for NORMAL TO OILY skin types!
If you need more hydration, or intense hydration, especially for dry skin, consider pairing it with a richer oil like wheat germ. The combo is simply fantastic.
How to incorporate Vitamin E oils into your routine
Below are my practical tips on how to incorporate these oils into your skincare routine.
You might want to use just one oil or create a blend—it’s really up to you. If you’re not sure where to start, try using just one oil first. I’ll give you more details on that below.
The important thing is that you try at least one oil. As you learn about natural ingredients and discover how amazing they are for your skin (yes, much better than commercial products if you ask me), you’ll eventually stick to these types of simple, effective routines.
👉 About blending the oils (or just using one!)
You can create a blend by mixing any of the oils mentioned above to get the benefits of each one. Or you can try one for a while, then switch to another, to see which one suits your skin best. The options are endless. If you’re not sure which one to start with, I recommend almond oil as a gentle introduction. If you want to create a blend, try mixing almond oil and sunflower oil for a balanced, nourishing effect. And so on. Experiment!
👉 Here’s how to apply the oils
Applying these oils is simple but important to get right for the best results. Start by taking a few drops (about 2-3 drops should be enough for your face). Warm the oil between your palms, then gently press the oil into your skin rather than rubbing—this helps your skin absorb the oil more effectively.
Massage the oil into your face in circular motions to promote blood circulation. You can use upward strokes around your neck and jawline for a lifting effect. For extra hydration, apply the oil on slightly damp skin to help lock in moisture.
If you’re using it at night, let it absorb before you rest your head on your pillow. If you’re using a lighter oil during the day, give it a few minutes to sink in before applying sunscreen or makeup (so if you like use a lighter oil like cottonseed during the day and a heavier one like almond or wheat germ at night).
👉 When to use (AM/PM)
Most Vitamin E oils are best used at night due to their rich consistency, which allows your skin to soak up the benefits while you sleep. However, lighter oils like cottonseed or sunflower can be used during the day, as per my example above.
👉 When to expect results
Ah! Bet you’ve been waiting for this one 🙂 Ok, with consistent use, you should start noticing softer, more hydrated skin within 2-4 weeks. Improvements in skin texture (and, yes, radiance) may take 4-6 weeks.
👉 Other tips…
If your skin is feeling dry, dull, or in need of extra nourishment, incorporating a Vitamin E-rich oil can be incredibly beneficial. If you have extremely sensitive skin, eczema, or are prone to breakouts, start slow and always patch test. Some oils can be too rich for sensitive skin types.
👉 (And here’s my favourite tip!!)
Always use oils on DAMP SKIN for better absorption! And avoid applying too much to prevent clogging pores. Less is more.
DO NOT FORGET THE BELOW…
1. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS patch test any new oils!
PATCH-TEST!! Especially oils you’re going to end up applying on your face. I’ve learned the hard way that it’s better to be safe (many of my clients have been allergic to different ingredients, from aloe vera to essential oils… so, yes, better to be safe than sorry).
2. BE CONSISTENT PLEASE!!
Like anything in skincare, consistency is key. Keep these oils in your routine, and over time you’ll see some AMAZING results.
