Top 10 Reasons Why People are Unhappy

We might not know exactly what makes people unhappy, but we do know there are many different things that can bring it on. It’s interesting to note that every one of the topics on this list is completely controllable by the individual, meaning it’s possible to avoid each of them if you put your mind to it.

Here are the top 10 reasons why people are unhappy:

1. You don’t have enough money

This is by far the number one reason that people are unhappy with their lives. It doesn’t matter how rich you are, if you’re not happy with your financial situation, then you’re going to be unhappy.

The truth is, there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with having a lot of money, but just like most things that can make us happy it’s not the money itself that makes us happy. It’s not even what we do with it. It’s what we feel about it.

If you think that having a lot of money is going to make you happy, then it will. If you don’t, then it won’t. Yes, that simple.

Money doesn’t have power. You do.

2. You’re wilting in the corporate world

Most people are unhappy mostly because they are working in jobs that they hate (office work, admin work, directive work, etc) and most probably can’t stand either their bosses or they feel depleted from “living” inside 4 walls, which is not natural and can lead to depression.

Money isn’t the only reason people are unhappy in the corporate world, they can hate their jobs too, which is another thing that they can do something about.

If you want to become successful in your career, you have to realize that money or going up the ladder in the corporate world is not the key. Money and/or job title and description are not what make people successful.

Successful people are happy with themselves, enjoy the challenge and are willing to adapt to change and grow.

Doing the thing(s) you love will bring success every day. Success is not something we achieve “one day”. It is something we live day by day.

3. You’re not in a fulfilling relationship or are single

There are many kinds of happiness in life and if you’re single, then you might think that this is the reason for your unhappiness.

However, if you’re not in a relationship, it could mean that you haven’t found someone with whom you can experience happiness. And that is totally fine!

Being in a toxic relationship or being single can make you unhappy, but they’re usually not the reason why you are unhappy. When you are happy, you feel empowered to take control of your life and your feelings, which is one of the keys to happiness. You will be able to make the right decision when it comes to your relationship.

Only one relationship needs to be healthy at all times: your relationship with yourself.

4. You’re out of shape

Just like having money, your body shape isn’t what makes you happy either.

Being in shape is a choice, so if you don’t have the motivation to start working out as well as eating healthy and you feel unhappy that’s probably why.

I’ve put on a lot of weight after my menopause, and, yes, I would like to lose some of the weight, but I’m very happy, very healthy, and there’s always room for improvement.

My body shape doesn’t determine my happiness. It never will. When I’m old and totally out of shape, does that mean I’ll have to be unhappy? That’s a choice I’ll make.

5. You don’t have any friends

We have a responsibility to ourselves while in this world and we can choose to be alone or to make friends that TRULY care about us (and vice-versa).

Having friends is not mandatory in life! If you didn’t have any friends, you’d still be alive.

However, as human beings, we have a need to be with other human beings. That doesn’t mean that we have to be “friends” with everybody else to feel good about ourselves. A sense of community is enough for a human to feel safe, happy, and comfortable.

6. You’re not in control of your life

I have news for you: you are never really in control of your life.

Do we really know what’s going to happen in the next second? We don’t. We truly don’t.

Taking control of your life is not the same as being in control of your life. Being in control refers to something external while taking control of your life refers to something internal.

If you’re taking control, you are in control of observing your emotions and letting them go through you without causing emotional disturbance or chaos.

However, if you’re trying to be in control of your life, then that means that there’s something outside of you controlling you.

All you can truly do is observe and enjoy, even when the emotions feel like tsunamis, let them go through without judging them.

Not easy, but possible. Once you train for a while and you get good at this, you will be able to feel the peace within at all times.

7. You don’t have any confidence

If you have no confidence in your own self-worth then you’re never going to be happy with your life.

However, confidence isn’t something that we can just wake up one day and have. It’s something that we have to work on every single day with our thoughts and actions.

Self-worth doesn’t come from other people. The only person you can determine your worth is yourself.

That means that you have to look at yourself in the mirror every day, and if you’re unhappy with what you see, then it’s time for a change.

8. You don’t like the way you look

This ties in with the point above regarding your weight as well. But it could also mean you’re unhappy with “parts” of your body (your hair, your nails, your legs, your arms, etc) and if you’re not happy with how you look, it’s time to change your lifestyle habits and start taking better care of yourself.

Determine if what you’re not happy with is because of health reasons (weight) or you’re just not happy with “parts” of yourself because you think other people won’t like them either.

If it’s because of your weight, then there are tons of solutions available to solve that issue, like diet and exercise.

If it is with “parts of yourself” that you believe need others’ approval, then you need to reassess why your self-esteem is this low. We don’t need others’ approval, only our own.

Can you do this? You know the answer.

9. You don’t like the way you think

It’s difficult, but you have to start thinking positive thoughts and change the negative ones that plague your mind.

If you’re not happy with yourself, then change your thoughts. It is not easy but if you keep “catching” negative thoughts and “replacing” them with positive ones you’re training your mind for positivity. It will get easier to do so every single time you do it.

I did it for a while and my mind has been producing positive thoughts for a long time now. Yes, every now and then the negative ones pop up (nothing wrong with that) but I either do some “mental pruning”, ignore them or do listen if it is something that makes sense (i.e.: “you need to hurry or you’ll be late for the dentist”.)

10. You spend your time on unimportant things

One of the best ways to be happy is to stay focused on important things and cut out the distractions in your life, if you can manage this then you’ll be much happier than most people are.

One of the biggest reasons why people are unhappy with their lives is that they are too focused on things that really don’t matter.

Unhappiness is a Choice

If you’re happy right now, then thank yourself for being happy!

If not, then there are a lot of different techniques for happiness, you just need to pick up one and start doing it consistently.

The most important thing to remember is that happiness is not outside of you, but inside. Always on the inside. This is where the key to your happiness is.

So, as you can see, it is just a question of finding it in the right place.
