This DIY Argan Oil Serum Is the Secret to Frizz-Free Hair!

I write so you share. Thank you.

Tired of fighting frizz and struggling with unruly hair? Let me share the secret to smooth, shiny, and manageable locks: a homemade argan oil serum! 🌟 This DIY recipe is quick, easy, and customisable to suit your hair’s needs.

I discovered this fabulous recipe on Mountain Rose Herbs, written by Hannah, and immediately had to try it for myself (I halved the amount to start). As someone with curly hair, I’m always on the lookout for ways to keep it hydrated and frizz-free, and this serum truly delivers.

Here’s the recipe, along with some tips and lessons I learned during the process (one drop too many can get messy!).

DIY/Homemade Hair Serum

I’ve been using this serum on my hair for around two weeks now, and honestly, I’m loving it! It feels so good to finally give my hair some real care – no more relying on the latest creams or lotions for curly hair that I’d only stick to for a month or two before getting bored or forgetting about them.

It wasn’t really about the products themselves or even the hassle of using them. Looking back, I realise it was more about how I felt about myself. When I didn’t feel that sense of self-love, I was always looking for something new to ‘fix’ things – not just in my hair care but in so many parts of my life: clothes, books, jobs, meals, you name it.

Now that I feel that deep sense of fulfilment within, everything feels different. I’m not chasing the next thing anymore. I enjoy the process – blending this serum, applying it to my hair – because it’s a moment of care, just for me. And my hair? It’s responding so beautifully.

There’s something so special about taking care of yourself in a way that feels intentional and loving. This serum has become more than just a hair product for me – it’s a little ritual of self-love, and it’s made all the difference!!

I absolutely LOVED making this serum, and using it on my hair has been such a joy. For me, the results aren’t just about how my hair looks – it’s the act of creating something beautiful and nourishing that feels so rewarding. Every time I use it, I’m reminded of the care I’m giving myself, and my body responds so beautifully to that.

Natural skincare has become such an important part of my life. It’s not just about the products but about the connection to myself. When you embrace that sense of self-awareness and love, it reflects in every inch of you – it’s what truly makes you shine.

But enough about that – let’s make this recipe! 😊

(First A Note About Making Your Own Hair Serum Recipes)

I love what Hannah says on the argan hair serum recipe article from Mountain Rose Herbs (where I originally got the recipe from). Have a look:

“The best thing about making your own hair serum recipe is that you get to customize the feel and smell every time you refill your precious bottle of botanical ingredients. I typically sway toward jojoba and argan oil, for my lightly coarse, curly hair, which tends to stay dry and oil-free, no matter how much oil I add to it. This allows me to freshen up my look without taking a brush to my hair – which can just destroy curls.” (Hannah, article from Mountain Rose Herbs)

Please make your own natural hair serums if you can! Argan hair serum is dead easy to make. Really, I can’t stress how easy it is to 1) make your own skincare and 2) get hooked to creating your own ‘line’ once you get started.

There’s NOTHING like the natural smells of essential oils and carrier oils (they feel like liquid gold in my hands) and I’m sure that this happens to everyone that enters this world, as when we touch carrier and essential oils we’re in direct relationship with nature, no middle man! (and no synthetics). Natural beats everything so the sooner you get into it, the better.

Making hair serum with argan oil couldn’t be easier. All you need is good quality ingredients (argan oil as carrier oil and a few essential oils) and off you go.

This particular recipe uses 3 different essential oils (more on them below) and all there is to it is shaking the 4 oils once you bottle them.

See? Easy!!

Argan Oil Serum Recipe

To make this argan oil serum for hair you’ll need:

1. Carrier Oil Base

2. Essential Oils

**In general don’t add more than a 2% dilution of essential oils. Essential oil content should only account for 1% to 2% of the total blend. More on dilutions conversions here.**

DIY Argan Oil Hair Serum Directions

You’ll need to pour all the oils into a  2 oz. cobalt blue glass dropper bottle (I love them) and shake to make sure all the oils blend together nicely. Invert the bottle a few times to make sure it’s all blending well.

Depending on the length of your hair you’ll be using less or more product. For my curls (above shoulder length) I use around 5 to 7 drops. I use when the hair is dry or wet indiscriminately. Once a day is fine, although I tend to use the product 3 or 4 times a week. Also during the day is also fine with me, but you can use at night if you prefer to (I haven’t noticed the pillow cases getting greasier). I’ll put it all together nicely below so it’s easy to check at a glance:

  • Drops: 5 to 10, depending on the length of your hair
  • How many times: Once or twice a day (morning, night, after showers, etc)

Below, argan oil hair serum benefits and how to use your new argan oil hair serum.

How to Use Argan Oil Hair Serum

I place a few drops on the palm of my hand (5 to 7, roughly), rub it slightly and then apply to my hair, making sure I cover all of it and particularly the ends (I avoid the roots/scalp). I use 3 or 4 times a week but I could use daily as well. I use it during the day and/or at night, indiscriminately.

Argan Oil Hair Serum Benefits

  • Argan Oil – Argan has made it big in the last few years (I remember suddenly seeing it everywhere in the drugstores, all hair related products seemed to have been infused with argan oil!). I use it on my face also (that’s for another blog entry). This oil contains antioxidants and is also high in vitamin E. It is suitable for all skin types.
  • Lavender Oil – Lavender essential oil is helpful in the treatment of hair loss (alopecia) so it helps promote hair growth. (Source)
  • Rosemary Oil- Stimulates blood circulation in the scalp which in turn promotes hair growth. It soothes the scalp and nourishes the hair follicles. (Source, source and source)
  • Basil Oil- Can reduce excessive hair oiliness, effective in revitalizing dull hair. (Source)

Caution: Essential Oils and Safety

Before you rush into making and using this serum (who would blame you!), keep these tips in mind:

  • Patch Test First: Essential oils are potent, and some people may have sensitivities. Apply a small amount of the serum to a patch of skin (like your inner arm) and wait 24 hours to ensure no reaction.
  • Stick to Dilution Guidelines: Keep the essential oil concentration at 1–2% for safety. Avoid overusing essential oils, as they can irritate the skin or scalp if too strong.
  • Avoid the Scalp if Oily or Sensitive: If you have an oily scalp or are prone to sensitivities, stick to applying the serum to the lengths and ends of your hair.

Extra Tips for Perfect Hair Days…

To make the most out of your serum, here are a few extra tips:

  • Use the Right Amount: Start with just a few drops and adjust based on your hair length and thickness. A little goes a long way!
  • Timing is Key: Apply the serum after washing your hair for added moisture or to dry hair to tame frizz and add shine.
  • Customise Your Blend: Not a fan of basil or lavender? Swap them out for other hair-friendly oils like cedarwood or ylang-ylang.

A Ritual Worth Keeping!

Making this serum has been more than just a DIY project – it’s become a ritual of care and love that I look forward to.

It’s amazing how something so simple can bring so much joy and make such a difference in how your hair feels and looks, right?

If you give this serum a try, I’d love to hear how it works for you! Remember to take your time with the process, enjoy the act of creating, and savour the results… 💛

And, just because I love researching, here are some links to medical journals regarding hair benefits of these wonderful, wonderful oils.

From Mercola: On argan oil, on lavender oil, on rosemary oil, on basil oil.
From medical journals: (Some not so focused on hair benefits, more like general benefits of the oils): On argan oil, on lavender oil, on basil oil. Here an article on hair growth-promoting effects of lavender oil “Thus, LO could be practically applied as a hair growth-promoting agent.” and here a an article on Rosemary oil vs minoxidil 2% for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: “The findings of the present trial provided evidence with respect to the efficacy of rosemary oil in the treatment of AGA.”

Are you Going to Make it?

If so, let me know how it went. Remember to be careful with the amount of essential oils you add to your recipe! Stick to my amounts above and you’re good to go.

  1. This recipe sounds amazing – thank you! I have lots of fine (so it looks thick), wavy, short, color-treated, often dry hair. My hairdresser during yesterday’s cut loved playing with it, lol. I spent more than $50 on taming/styling products, so I’m looking forward to making something that works without making my hair look greasy.

    1. No doubt that natural products can many times do as much as the most expensive products in the stores. A natural skincare fellow student who was well advanced in her studies told me that she could replicate any of the formulas made by the most expensive brands out there, and that making them was very cheap compared to how much the companies charge. It makes you think, doesn’t it?! I’m not implying everyone should learn how to make difficult skincare formulas at home but the basics with oils, butters and waxes are easy to work with and can make a HUGE difference in your skincare routine (with amazing results).
