DIY/Homemade Argan Oil Hair Serum Recipe

I write so you share. Thank you.

I don’t get excited about online recipes unless they’re from my regular reads (both online and offline).

This DIY/homemade argan oil hair serum recipe by Mountain Rose Herbs, written by Hannah, grabbed my attention though to the point where I made it for myself (but halved the amount), as I have curly hair.

I’m writing here the recipe together with what went wrong (when you’re working with oils one drop outside your goal means mess!) so you can avoid making the same mistakes.

DIY/Homemade Hair Serum

Lynn and I have been putting serum on our hair for around 2 weeks now (I made Jojoba oil hair serum for her). We’re both very happy with the results – to be honest it was about time I added some loveliness to my hair that didn’t involve getting excited about the latest moisture cream or lotion for curly hair. Pre-awakening state I would have used the latest cream or lotion for around 2 months or so (tops) and then stop from either forgetfulness or boredom – or both. Some products made it longer than the 2 months but eventually I did stop them.

I wasn’t about the ingredients or getting tired of the product itself (or the hassle, or the money); it was a lack of self-love that drove me to try ‘the next thing’ (in every area, not only regarding personal care, but also clothes, books, money, people, jobs, clients, meals, and a long list of etceteras). When there’s a deep sense of lack within, one tries to fix and fill it from without. Once the sense of lack disappeared, I found myself enjoying the moment (nothing exists outside of it!) – not out of logic, but out of a very much experienced sense of deep fulfilment.

So, I LOVED making the serum as well as adding it to my hair very frequently. I’m not waiting for results. The results are creating the product and using it! From this new-found self love, my whole body responds beautifully. Yes, natural skincare is part of the ‘deal’ when you’re living life via spirit, not via mind, but it is the awareness of Self that makes you beautiful – inch by inch.

Enough of this, let’s get on with the recipe then : )

A Note About Making Your Own Hair Serum Recipes

I love what Hannah says on the argan hair serum recipe article from Mountain Rose Herbs (where I originally got the recipe from). Have a look:

“The best thing about making your own hair serum recipe is that you get to customize the feel and smell every time you refill your precious bottle of botanical ingredients. I typically sway toward jojoba and argan oil, for my lightly coarse, curly hair, which tends to stay dry and oil-free, no matter how much oil I add to it. This allows me to freshen up my look without taking a brush to my hair – which can just destroy curls.” (Hannah, article from Mountain Rose Herbs)

Please make your own natural hair serums if you can! Argan hair serum is dead easy to make. Really, I can’t stress how easy it is to 1) make your own skincare and 2) get hooked to creating your own ‘line’ once you get started.

There’s NOTHING like the natural smells of essential oils and carrier oils (they feel like liquid gold in my hands) and I’m sure that this happens to everyone that enters this world, as when we touch carrier and essential oils we’re in direct relationship with nature, no middle man! (and no synthetics). Natural beats everything so the sooner you get into it, the better.

Making hair serum with argan oil couldn’t be easier. All you need is good quality ingredients (argan oil as carrier oil and a few essential oils) and off you go.

This particular recipe uses 3 different essential oils (more on them below) and all there is to it is shaking the 4 oils once you bottle them.

See? Easy!!

Argan Oil Serum Recipe

To make this argan oil serum for hair you’ll need:

1. Carrier Oil Base

2. Essential Oils

**In general don’t add more than a 2% dilution of essential oils. Essential oil content should only account for 1% to 2% of the total blend. More on dilutions conversions here.**

DIY Argan Oil Hair Serum Directions

You’ll need to pour all the oils into a  2 oz. cobalt blue glass dropper bottle (I love them) and shake to make sure all the oils blend together nicely. Invert the bottle a few times to make sure it’s all blending well.

Depending on the length of your hair you’ll be using less or more product. For my curls (above shoulder length) I use around 5 to 7 drops. I use when the hair is dry or wet indiscriminately. Once a day is fine, although I tend to use the product 3 or 4 times a week. Also during the day is also fine with me, but you can use at night if you prefer to (I haven’t noticed the pillow cases getting greasier). I’ll put it all together nicely below so it’s easy to check at a glance:

  • Drops: 5 to 10, depending on the length of your hair
  • How many times: Once or twice a day (morning, night, after showers, etc)

Below, argan oil hair serum benefits and how to use your new argan oil hair serum.

How to Use Argan Oil Hair Serum

I place a few drops on the palm of my hand (5 to 7, roughly), rub it slightly and then apply to my hair, making sure I cover all of it and particularly the ends (I avoid the roots/scalp). I use 3 or 4 times a week but I could use daily as well. I use it during the day and/or at night, indiscriminately.

Argan Oil Hair Serum Benefits

  • Argan Oil – Argan has made it big in the last few years (I remember suddenly seeing it everywhere in the drugstores, all hair related products seemed to have been infused with argan oil!). I use it on my face also (that’s for another blog entry). This oil contains antioxidants and is also high in vitamin E. It is suitable for all skin types.
  • Lavender Oil – Lavender essential oil is helpful in the treatment of hair loss (alopecia) so it helps promote hair growth. (Source)
  • Rosemary Oil- Stimulates blood circulation in the scalp which in turn promotes hair growth. It soothes the scalp and nourishes the hair follicles. (Source, source and source)
  • Basil Oil- Can reduce excessive hair oiliness, effective in revitalizing dull hair. (Source)

And, just because I love researching, here are some links to medical journals regarding hair benefits of these wonderful, wonderful oils.

From Mercola: On argan oil, on lavender oil, on rosemary oil, on basil oil.
From medical journals: (Some not so focused on hair benefits, more like general benefits of the oils): On argan oil, on lavender oil, on basil oil. Here an article on hair growth-promoting effects of lavender oil “Thus, LO could be practically applied as a hair growth-promoting agent.” and here a an article on Rosemary oil vs minoxidil 2% for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: “The findings of the present trial provided evidence with respect to the efficacy of rosemary oil in the treatment of AGA.”

If so, let us know how it went. Remember to be careful with the amount of essential oils you add to your recipe.

  1. This recipe sounds amazing – thank you! I have lots of fine (so it looks thick), wavy, short, color-treated, often dry hair. My hairdresser during yesterday’s cut loved playing with it, lol. I spent more than $50 on taming/styling products, so I’m looking forward to making something that works without making my hair look greasy.

    1. No doubt that natural products can many times do as much as the most expensive products in the stores. A natural skincare fellow student who was well advanced in her studies told me that she could replicate any of the formulas made by the most expensive brands out there, and that making them was very cheap compared to how much the companies charge. It makes you think, doesn’t it?! I’m not implying everyone should learn how to make difficult skincare formulas at home but the basics with oils, butters and waxes are easy to work with and can make a HUGE difference in your skincare routine (with amazing results).
